Churchill, Winston Spencer 1874-1965 British AR, British Columbia. 9.5 x 13.25 ins., (24 x 33.5 cm.), Watercolour/Gouache, Signed with Monogram W.S.C., Verso Label stating Winston S.Churchill, British Columbia over stamped with Galerie Mathias Fels. Provenance: The gallery was a much respected in Paris which sadly closed a few years ago on the death of its owner Mathias Fels in 2009. Mathias Fels organised some very important exhibitions including artists like Picasso. One of their characteristics was to place a simple label verso with the name of the painter and the subject and over stamp it with Galerie Mathias Fels Paris. In the list of illustrations is a sample of this approach for a different Churchill painting. Churchill showed immense modesty in regard to the titles and gongs given to people. He was probably the greatest Englishman of the twentieth century, yet refused a knighthood. Nowadays people are given knighthoods for kicking a football, saying the right thing in politics or winning a race. What have we come to in this country!
