What an occasion for us at Staines-upon-Thames with over a thousand people turning up to have their items valued. It was wonderful to see so many people and we had a full team of experts present to handle the numbers. Alison, Robin, Simon and I were aided by Simon Valentine, Charles Newington and guest valuer Paul Martin of BBC Flog It! fame. The event was part of the town’s efforts to raise their profile, considering Staines competes for custom with towns like Eton and Windsor. The weekend showed a good increase in trade for nearby shops, so the scheme showed an immediate gain.
The valuation weekend was held on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September in a marquee in the town square, which fortunately was near the Conservative Club with its splendid lunch facilities. We all enjoyed the two days very much and consigned many quality items for our October sale.
They were even queueing outside!
The star item was a collection of small Chinese watercolours that were estimated at £150 to £350 as a come-buy-me estimate. During the auction bidding
was steady from £150 to £300, when suddenly it jumped to £3,000 with internet interest, finally finishing at £5,950. With strong bids from America,
the lot was eventually bought by a client in London.
