Coming up in our 23rd September sale we have a very fine portrait of the politician Nigel Farage by David Griffiths, one of the finest portrait painters in Britain. His portrait could not have come to us at a better time. Almost everyone has heard of Nigel Farage and his campaigns to leave the EU.
Unfortunately fame brings some unpleasant situations. His car was tampered with leaving his wheel nuts loose, which might have killed him. Farage has been the MEP representative for South East England for some time. He has enjoyed some spectacular moments in the Euorpean Parliament, on one occasion telling the members that hardly any of them had ever had proper jobs, which created a chorus of jeers and hoots. He was of course right. In the present political climate, Farage could still play a major part. He is very articulate and a good public speaker. Unlike 90% of politicians, like him or loathe him, he has real charisma.
David Griffiths has painted many famous people, and first came to national notice with his portrait of Prince Charles after his investiture as Prince of Wales. He has painted the portraits of many ambassadors, royalty, distinguished parliamentarians, actors and other famous people, often leaning towards Wales being Welsh himself. It is certainly a strong and powerful image and it hung in the Royal Academy Exhibition with a price of £25,000.
Nigel Farage: Oil on Canvas, 40 x 30 inches and very well framed. Estimate £3,000 - £5,000.
Update: On the day the painting sold for £3,845 including commission.
