Thatcher CF Eighteenth Century British, Portrait of Ferrers, Laurence Shirley Fourth Earl
Thatcher CF Eighteenth Century British, Portrait of Ferrers, Laurence Shirley Fourth Earl. 7 x 6 cms., Oil on Ivory. Ferrers has the dubious distinction of being the last peer of the realm to be hung for murder. Ferrers had a violent temper and in a drunken fit shot Johnson, his old steward. In 1750 he was hung after a trial by his peers. To no avail he had pleaded insanity, he said after the trial he had only done that to make his family feel better. There is an image of Lord Ferrer's execution with a huge crowd watching, as was the custom in those days. The image of the execution is not for sale.
