Steyn, Stella 1907-1987 Irish AR, Self Portrait
Steyn, Stella 1907-1987 Irish AR, Self Portrait. 33.5 x 20 ins., (82.5 x 51 cms.), Oil on Canvas. Stamp verso, Title and Date 1952 verso: Thomson, Roddick and Metcalf Studio Sale Stella Steyn. Thomson Roddick and Metcalf were given the estate of Stella Steyn to sell after her death. Stella painted some superb works while she was single, but like so many women of her period once she married and raised a family the creative spirit declined. She had been a friend of James Joyce's daughter. Stella trained in Dublin, Paris and at the Bauhaus, which was a little scary being Jewish with the Nazi party gaining more influence in Germany. She married an English professor, whom she had met in Berlin, in 1938 and settled into married life still painting but without the verve of her younger days. The self portrait is charming and beautifully composed and painted.
