Scrapbook by Alexander Petzhodt, Titled a 'Countryside Scientific Study in Southern Russia'
Scrapbook by Alexander Petzhodt, Titled a 'Countryside Scientific Study in Southern Russia'. The title page states the he information was collected by Alexander Petzhodt and illustrated by Grunfils. ( I hope my German is up to it. If it isn't, I have photographed the title page). This is a really interesting and beautifully laid out collection of 55 images from Southern Russia, which I feel is almost certainly the Crimea not far from Odessa. There is a beautifully hand written index stating details of all the illustrations. The first part of the book illustrates farm machinery, then it moves to people and places. The illustrations of Tartars suggest the Crimea, where many still live. Some of the drawings are beautiful, others are weaker. It really made me wonder what on earth Alexander Petzhodt was doing in the Crimea in 1855 looking at farm machinery. I would have thought Germany would have had superior equipment to Russia, was he on a spying trip?
