Schreuder, Jan 1904-1964 Dutch, Abstract No.5. 24 x 19.75 ins., (61 x 50 cms.), Oil on Canvas, Signed and Dated verso. Schreuder graduated from The Hague School of Art in 1923. He began his career as a cartographer for Royal Dutch Shell in Venezuela, Guatemala, Trinidad and Ecuador, where he worked until 1950 resigning to start a career in art. He set up the Centre for Arts in Quito, which became a meeting place for serious artists and numerous other people. He had been influenced by the Cobra movement and was keen on painting abstracts, at first expressionist and then later more subtle like Abstract No. 5. He exhibited in many major galleries in America, South America and Spain and his work is held by major institutions around the world and by many influential private people such as Christopher Isherwood, Rockerfeller, Professor Arnold Toynbee.
