Sanders, Phillip b
Sanders, Phillip b.1938 British AR The Red Rosette, 28.5 x 36 ins., (72 x 91.5 cms.), Oil on Canvas, Signed. Phillip is highlighting the impact of the grey horse against the dark clouds in a large sky. The horse has just won its class at a county show. Phillip used to paint lots of horse tracing scenes, but now he concentrates mostly landscapes, hounds, portraits and horses. He has worked closely with the Royal Horse Artillery (Kings Troop) for ten years. His inspirations have been Stubbs for truthfulness, Ben Marshall for theatre, Munnings for colour and Modigliani for simplicity. He feels that good art should take one's breath away, whatever medium. 'You should be able to 'live' with a piece of art. It should be able to transcend fashion. Money should be the last consideration, but selling a little piece of your soul to pay the gas man is accepted.' He commented on painting, 'Thought and preparation is the hardest part. Sometimes paintings are put away for reworking later. My main themes are sunlight and shadows.'
