In 2016 the British Museum held an exhibition of Oxtoby's works in the Print Room, Oxtoby's Rockers. In an article about the exhibition Oxtoby was described as a member of the Yorkshire Mafia amongst whom was also David Hockney.

His good friend Charles commenting in the catalogue for Oxtoby's exhibition at Guy Hilton's gallery wrote, "... I do remember at the time he was a complete bastard - holding me for terrible long nightshift hours in the Hell's Kitchen the etching studio became. Making these monstrous large copper plates I would be elbow deep in acid and ink, exhausted while he - feet on the bed of the press would yell, punch like, 'That's the way to do it,' and in between would regale me with his inexhaustible supply of stories and jokes. He clawed these images out of copper with a six inch nail and took enormous risks ... technically they are masterpieces."
