Tom McGuinness was also a rare artist who spent his working life in a coal mine. He entered the coal industry as a 'Bevin Boy' and stayed for thirty nine years until his redundancy in 1982. He drew and painted even at the pit. Surprisingly he was encouraged by his superiors to gain further experience. He drew and painted what he knew, the world of mining with compassion and kindness. As a lad from a humble mining village in County Durham, he developed wide interests. As Lindsay Jennings wrote in Goodnight Mr. Tom, ''I can remember when he was sitting next to me on a coach trip to Paris with a flat cap on, reading the paper with a Walkman stuck in his ear, but he was reading the Times and listening to Mahler''. Tom died shortly before a major retrospective of his work was being organised at Bishop Auckland Town Hall. A book, Interpreting the Art of Tom McGuinness, by Robert Matthews and Gillian Wales was published in 2006.. His work is highly collectable these days, For a dealer the book could be quite a gold mine.
