Lowry, Stephen 1887-1976 British AR, Street Scene near a Factory
Lowry, Stephen 1887-1976 British AR, Street Scene near a Factory. 10 x 8 ins., (25 x 20 cms.), Offset Lithograph on wove paper, Signed in Pencil, Published by Adam Collection and Printed by Chorley and Pickersgill, Edition size 850, Fine Art Trade Guild Stamp and number letters. In good condition and well framed. The print has an unusual tale attached to it. Lowry gave the original painting from which the print was taken to his friend, Alex Leggett, the chairman of Lancashire cricket club, who loved art and cricket in equal measure. In 1967 Alex sold the painting to a friend, who displayed it in his home for a number of years. Unfortunately the value of Lowry's work rose dramatically, which made insurance very expensive, so he hid the picture in a suitcase on top of a wardrobe in the attic, where the painting lay for years and was forgotten. The owner died last year, his son found the painting and sold the forgotten gem at auction. The painting had never been shown in public.
