Hayter, Stanley William British AR The Tropic of Cancer, 22 x 27.5 ins., (56 x 70 cms.), Engraving and Soft Ground Etching 38/50, Signed and Dated 49. Tropic of Cancer is the major etching by Hayter, the recognised master of the medium. From 1934 to 1939 Hayter was in frequent contact with Picasso and gave him a lot of help with his etchings. Hayter was the founder of the famous Atelier 17 in Paris, which took the craft of intaglio printmaking to new technical levels. The Gallerie Michel Fillion described 'The Tropic of Cancer' as 'The largest engraving by Hayter and one of the most important engravings in black and white by the artist.'
