Griffiths, David b1939 MBE British Aneurin (Nye) Bevan
Griffiths, David b1939 MBE British Aneurin (Nye) Bevan. 30 x 24 ins., (76 x 61 cms.), Oil on Canvas, Signed. In the current election, where the NHS is such a central theme discussed by all parties, it is grand to see such a good portrait of the man who was the architect of the NHS. Bevan left school at 13 and gradually worked his way up the union movement. He became a leading MP often challenging Churchill for his mistakes in the war. When Clement Atlee became prime minister after the labour landslide victory, Bevan became Minister for Health. He was the architect of the NHS, which became law in 1948. The doctors had been very agitated at the thought of having to obey bureaurocrats not themselves and called him the Tito of Tonypandy. Bevan was a flexible man and agreed to allow doctors to have a private practice as well, which resulted in most doctors joining the NHS. David Griffiths is a distinguished portrait painter who has been awarded the MBE for his services to art. He has painted many very distinguished people. Last auction we sold his outstanding portrait of Nigel Farage.
