Cunningham, Vera (1897-1955) British
Cunningham, Vera (1897-1955) British. Seated Figure, 22 x 14.5 ins (56 x 37 cms), Watercolour, Signed. Vera Cunningham was model and mistress of Sir Mathew Smith's friend, Bernard Meninsky. Smith walked into Meninsky's studio one day and saw Vera for the first time. Within minutes the painfully shy Smith took Vera out of the studio and into his life. Cunningham was the perfect antithesis of Smith, being robust, voluptuous, earthy and even coarse. She became the model/mistress/muse that he so badly needed. Vera was also a very competent and unusual artist in her own right.
