Bratby, John Randall 1928-1992 British AR, Paternity I. 54 x 36 ins., (137 x 91.5 cms.), Oil on Canvas, Signed and Dated 1962. Provenance: This painting has wonderful provenance and comes from a private client: Exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery 1991; Retrospective Exhibition of Bratby's Work organised by Hartlepool Museums Service in Association with the Phoenix Gallery London 1992 at Gray Art Gallery & Museum, Hartlepool, Berwick upon Tweed Museum and Art Gallery, Lillie Art Gallery Milngavie, Maclaurin Art Gallery Ayr; Exhibited at the Atkinson Art Gallery Southport 1989, Pelter Sands Bristol 1989, Phoenix Gallery Lavenham 1987. Paternity ! is a fine example of Bratby's work when he was still in his prime before any divorce from Jean. His compositions were often slightly eccentric, but not crude as some of his later work became. Paternity 1 is one of the most exhibited of his works and rightly so. it is a fine painting by a very good artist.
