An early 19th century French faience plate
An early 19th century French faience plate. Decorated with an image depicting the final flight of the French aeronaut Madame Sophie Blanchard (1778 - 1819) with Mme Blanchard 1819 inscribed beneath and surrounded with floral foliage running around the edge. Mme Blanchard was the first female to work as a professional baloonist. On 6th July 1819 whilst performing at the Tivoli Gardens in Paris her hydrogen filled balloon caught on fire, at which point she became entangled by the net surrounding it and tragically fell to her death. 9.8 in (24.9 cm) diameter.
