Description:

A Nepalese gilt silver Garuda hair ornament or pendant, Newar People, Kathmandu valley, Nepal, 18th/19th century. Depicting the deity Garuda, king of birds and celestial mode of transport for Vishnu modelled in gilt metal and polished coral. The coral head is finely incised with facial features and the outstretched arms are incorporated with mother of pearl wings. Garuda is flanked by two natural pearls and seated on a trefoil shaped throne adorned with turquoise stone and ruby coloured glass cabochons. A similar example resides in the British Museum. 1.9 in (4.8 cm) width.
