A Chinese Eastern Zhou dynasty style jade openwork plaque
A Chinese Eastern Zhou dynasty style jade openwork plaque. Probably late 19th/early 20th century. Elaborately carved in the form of a bi disc, the central aperture enclosed by an inner band of finely carved spiralling furrows in shallow relief joined at three equidistant points to a surrounding outer band with openwork depicting scrolling phoenixes with the inner and outer edges carved with concentric ridges. Mounted above in pierced openwork are scrolling dragons amongst clouds with incised decoration. The stone is of a creamy white tone with some russet coloured surface residue. Comes together with a fitted box. 9.6 in (24.5 cm) height.
