A Chinese brass mounted folding horseshoe backed armchair, probably 20th century
A Chinese brass mounted folding horseshoe backed armchair, probably 20th century. The arms and rail are elegantly formed in one continuous curve terminating with hand rests swept outwards. The curved back splat is divided into three sections, the main central section decorated with an elaborately carved, pierced openwork panel depicting a qilin amongst scrolling clouds looking upwards towards a double gourd vase, the upper panel with a pierced openwork cartouche of ruyi form depicting a coiled up dragon to the centre and the lower panel carved with scrolling foliage. Additionally, the arms are also carved with pierced openwork decoration depicting dragons and scrolling foliage with further carved decoration to both the seat's edge and the foot rest. Brass strap fittings are mounted at various points throughout the armchair.
